This year, FareShare celebrates 20 years of rescuing surplus food and cooking nutritious meals for vulnerable people. While it’s important to celebrate milestones, the demands of a particularly challenging time won’t allow us to reflect for long. We anxiously await the impacts of the withdrawal of JobKeeper and the JobSeeker supplement. We are prepared to respond to any change in need, just as we did last year. As our wonderful temporary kitchen workforce departs in Melbourne, we are inviting our regular volunteers to return. Despite the break, we are delighted that the majority of our loyal volunteers are committed to coming back, just as they have been in Brisbane. And we certainly need them as we transition to packaging our delicious, nutritious meals into new single- serve trays. The feedback from charities and individuals has been effusive. Our new meals provide dignity as well as vital nutrition to people experiencing food poverty. Marcus Godinho, FareShare CEO
FareShare has adopted a very special goal this year - to boost the impact of EVERY FareShare meal on the person who receives it. Providing nutritious food is always important, but ensuring dignity and respect can be equally valid for a struggling person or family. Our new Melbourne warehouse was always predicted to be a gamechanger, but it proved to be absolutely critical during FareShare's response to COVID-19. Read how the team delivers.
From the heart - a cake for a centenarian There’s nothing to say I care like a home-baked cake. Here’s chef Cherie with a treat for Alec, a centenarian and World War II veteran, who used to collect FareShare meals on his mobility scooter from the Veterans' Association Op Shop in Boronia. Now in aged care, the indomitable Alec was delighted to receive the cake during a visit from his daughter. His verdict: “Quite yummy”.
